5.6 earthquake rattles Northern California: Some injuries reported, thousands lose power

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Northern California near Willits on Wednesday morning, causing power outages for about 10,000 customers in Mendocino County and scattering items in stores.

The USGS initially estimated a stronger quake before downgrading it, and officials reported some injuries but no deaths or major damage.

Emergency crews responded to downed power lines, possible gas leaks, and water line breaks while urging residents to avoid major roads.

PG&E restored power to roughly half of affected customers within hours and reported no damage to its infrastructure, KCRA 3 has reported.

Authorities said the region experienced minor aftershocks and continued to assess the full impact of the strongest quake there in decades.
