SpaceX launched the first test flight of its secretive Starfall reentry capsule on June 23 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral.
The company said the mission is designed to test a new spacecraft intended for microgravity research, in-space manufacturing, and potential cargo delivery, but provided few technical details.
Much of the flight was kept unusually quiet, with limited livestream coverage and no confirmation of the capsule’s condition after reentry or splashdown.
Some observers noted the mission’s unusual profile, including payload and landing choices, which fueled speculation about additional undisclosed objectives, Space News has reported.
The launch marks SpaceX’s entry into a growing market for orbital manufacturing and reentry vehicles already being pursued by several other companies.
