House passes GOP stock trading ban bill

The House passed a Republican-backed bill banning members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from purchasing new individual stocks while allowing them to keep current holdings.

The measure also requires lawmakers to publicly disclose planned stock sales at least seven days in advance.

Supporters said the bill would help restore public trust in Congress, while critics argued it does not go far enough because it excludes the executive branch and allows existing stock ownership.

The legislation was amended to include a voter ID requirement, adding provisions related to election security, The Hill has reported.

The bill passed 232-198 and now moves to the Senate for consideration.
