At least 25 people were killed and dozens more injured after a passenger bus overturned near the coastal town of Boumerdes, east of Algiers, on Friday.

Authorities said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, while the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the crash site and met with emergency responders.

The tragedy follows several deadly bus crashes in Algeria over the past two years, the BBC has reported.

Road safety officials say nearly 3,900 people were killed and more than 37,000 injured in traffic accidents across the country last year.
