Progressive state representative Angie Nixon defeated former Army intelligence officer Alexander Vindman in Florida’s Democratic Senate primary, despite having a much smaller campaign budget.
Nixon, a Democratic Socialists of America member, will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the November general election for the remaining two years of the Senate term.
Vindman had been widely expected to win because of his significant fundraising advantage and national profile from his role in President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.
After the loss, Vindman congratulated Nixon and pledged to support her campaign against Moody, The Guardian has reported.
Nixon’s victory adds to a series of recent primary wins by progressive candidates, although establishment Democrats also won several other Florida races this week.
