Massive flash floods struck parts of Nepal and China after an ice and rock avalanche triggered a sudden surge of water, killing at least 98 people and leaving hundreds missing.

Nepal reported 95 deaths, while 265 people were reported missing in China’s Tibet region, with many of the missing being tourists, pilgrims and foreign workers.

The floods destroyed homes, roads, villages and hydropower projects, while rescue teams searched for survivors and several countries offered assistance.

Climate experts said the disaster highlights the growing danger of extreme weather in the Himalayas, where glaciers are melting faster because of rising global temperatures, the AP has reported.

The region experienced another deadly flash flood last year, raising concerns about the need for stronger early-warning systems and improved disaster preparedness.
