At least 47 people were killed and more than 50 others kidnapped when armed gangs attacked the Kenscoff community near Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

The United Nations said at least five of those killed were children, while 22 victims were reportedly executed inside a church where they had sought shelter.

A gang leader threatened to kill the hostages if Haitian security forces killed any gang members during efforts to retake the area.

The attack, which also included the burning of 25 homes, has raised new concerns about Haiti’s worsening security situation and the government’s ability to protect civilians, NPR has reported.

Gang violence has displaced about 1.5 million people in Haiti, with more than 3,050 people killed between January and June as armed groups continue expanding their control.
