Hurricane Lowell brought fierce winds and heavy rain to Hawaii’s western islands Tuesday, causing widespread power outages and significant damage, particularly on Kauai.

Nearly all of Kauai’s roughly 35,000 utility customers lost power, while strong waves damaged coastal roads and pushed sand and rocks into beachside areas.

Although Lowell’s center passed west of the islands rather than making a direct hit, hurricane-force winds extended far beyond the storm’s center, with gusts reaching around 80 mph.

Authorities warned that flooding and mudslides remained a threat, while about 300 people sought shelter and crews worked to clear trees and debris from roads, the AP has reported.

The storm weakened as it moved away, but officials continued urging residents to remain cautious as Hawaii assessed the damage and dealt with dangerous conditions.
