Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell returned to the Senate on Monday for the first time in three months following hospitalization after a fall at his home.

The 84-year-old senator later revealed that he had briefly lost consciousness from the fall and was also treated for mild pneumonia.

McConnell appeared in a wheelchair and spoke slowly to reporters, saying he had returned to work on a farm bill and continue supporting NATO and Ukraine.

He is the longest-serving Senate leader and is scheduled to retire at the end of January after four decades in office, the AP has reported.

Republicans have nominated Rep. Andy Barr to succeed him, while Democrats have nominated former state lawmaker Charles Booker.
