The U.S. Justice Department has charged five people allegedly connected to Russian intelligence with operating a network targeting Kremlin critics around the world.

Prosecutors allege the group attempted to recruit people in the United States to surveil and potentially kill a Russian dissident believed to be living near Washington, D.C.

The indictment also alleges that members offered money to a U.S. citizen to kill a person critical of Russia and discussed alternative plans involving arson.

Three defendants face murder-for-hire conspiracy charges, while all five are accused of conspiring to finance terrorism, though all remain at large in Russia, CBS News has reported.

U.S. authorities say the alleged activities also connect to failed arson plots in Europe, while Russia has historically denied involvement in attacks against its critics.
