An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and wounded a man Sunday afternoon in Austin, Texas, after a traffic stop, according to local authorities.

The man was shot once in the torso and remained in serious but stable condition at a hospital.

Austin police said city officers were not involved in the shooting, while Mayor Kirk Watson called for the police department to participate in the investigation.

The Department of Homeland Security did not provide details about the incident, and Texas Department of Public Safety said ICE requested assistance with a vehicle pursuit shortly before the shooting, the AP has reported.

Anti-ICE protesters gathered at the scene as local authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
