South Korea’s humanoid robot ‘Gabi’ becomes first robotic Buddhist monk

A humanoid robot named GI, given the Buddhist name Gabi, was formally ordained in a symbolic ceremony at Jogye Temple ahead of Buddha’s Birthday celebrations.

The event, organized by the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, aimed to highlight the harmony between tradition and emerging technology.

During the ceremony, monks adapted Buddhist rituals for the robot, including placing a necklace of prayer beads and a festival sticker instead of traditional incense burning.

Gabi also accepted modified “robot precepts” focused on ethical behavior, safety, and energy use, UPI has reported.

The robot is expected to participate in an upcoming lantern parade alongside other robotic companions, symbolizing the integration of spirituality and innovation.
