A 29-year-old man armed with a shotgun opened fire on a police officer outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, during Yom Kippur, triggering a shootout involving up to 30 shots.

The alleged shooter, identified as Sean Ward, suffered life-threatening injuries, while Const. Jeff Smith, a 13-year police veteran, was seriously wounded and remained in intensive care.

About two dozen people were inside the synagogue during the shooting, but no worshippers were injured, and the synagogue canceled its remaining Yom Kippur services.

Authorities have not established a motive or determined whether the synagogue or Jewish community was specifically targeted, while police investigate the shooting and the actions of the officers, PBS has reported.

The incident prompted increased security around places of worship, with officials condemning antisemitism and emphasizing the Jewish community’s right to worship safely.
