Italy’s Giorgia Meloni forces through new electoral law ahead of vote

Italy’s parliament has approved a major electoral law backed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ahead of national elections scheduled for 2027.

The new system introduces proportional representation and awards bonus seats to a coalition that receives more than 42% of the vote, helping it secure a parliamentary majority.

Meloni argues the changes will promote political stability and make it easier for future governments to govern effectively.

Opposition parties accuse her government of changing the rules to improve its chances of staying in power and say the reform could distort voters’ representation, NBC News has reported.

The opposition has vowed to challenge the law in Italy’s Constitutional Court, while the new rules have also exposed disagreements within Meloni’s own governing coalition.
