Luigi Mangione’s legal team has dropped plans to use a psychiatric defense in his upcoming September state trial for the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan.
The move came shortly after they had indicated they might argue “extreme emotional disturbance” and reference psychiatric evaluations.
The reversal followed a judge’s order requiring the defense to promptly share any psychiatric evidence with prosecutors, who accused them of withholding information.
Legal analysts called the decision a “stunning reversal,” though the reason behind it remains unclear and the defense strategy has not yet been replaced, NPR has reported.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty and also faces a separate federal trial in the case.
