Christa Pike discharged from the hospital and back in prison

Christa Pike has been released from a local hospital and returned to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Tennessee following a failed execution attempt last month.

Pike was hospitalized for several days after receiving two doses of the sedative pentobarbital during the September 30 execution attempt, which she survived.

Her attorney, who witnessed the procedure, described how Pike became unconscious but continued breathing and making choking sounds after the second dose.

A judge has ordered prison officials to preserve all evidence related to the failed execution, including messages and other records, as the circumstances are examined, NPR has reported.

Pike remains on death row for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Knoxville Job Corps, when Pike was 18 years old.
