
The United States Department of Justice has announced it has seized #3.36bn of Bitcoin last year, which was stolen from an infamous darkness website.
- WALL STREET JOURNAL – The Justice Department said Monday it had seized cryptocurrency once valued at $3.36 billion from a Georgia man who pleaded guilty to stealing bitcoin from the Silk Road online marketplace.
- BBC – The stash of 50,676 Bitcoin was found hidden on various devices in a hacker’s home in an underfloor safe and inside a popcorn tin.
- CNBC – It is the DOJ’s second-largest financial seizure to date, following its seizure of $3.6 billion in allegedly stolen cryptocurrency linked to the 2016 hack of the crypto exchange Bitfinex, which the DOJ announced in February.
- TECH CRUNCH – The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York said that James Zhong of Gainesville, Georgia, pleaded guilty on November 4 to committing wire fraud in September 2012. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
