Local authorities have reported that an axe attack at a daycare center in the southern Brazilian city of Blumenau has resulted in the death of four children, while four others have been injured.

The victims who lost their lives were three boys and a girl, all between the ages of five and seven, according to local police.

Jorginho Mello, the governor of Santa Catarina state, reported on Twitter that a male suspect, aged 25, has been arrested in connection with the axe attack at the daycare center in Blumenau, Brazil.

According to a police officer who spoke to CNN Brazil, the suspect is believed to have jumped over a wall into the playground of the Cantinho Bom Pastor daycare center before attacking the children.

The attacker fled when teachers came to the children’s defense, but later turned himself in to the police, the official said.
