According to U.S. officials, statements from a Russian paramilitary leader, and media reports, a tragic incident occurred in the city of Bakhmut, Ukraine.

It is believed that a building collapsed during a Russian artillery barrage, leading to the death of a retired Special Forces soldier, the Army Times reported.

The soldier in question, Nicholas Maimer, had previously served as a staff sergeant in the National Guard before retiring.

He was actively involved in a non-profit organization aimed at providing assistance to civilians and training Ukrainian troops.

This information was shared by fellow Americans who were also working in Ukraine, as reported by CNN.

The Idaho National Guard, from which Maimer retired with an honorable discharge on December 24, 2018, expressed their condolences to the veteran’s family.

Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Borders, a spokesperson for the Idaho National Guard, conveyed their sympathy and stated, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Nicholas Maimer, as well as his friends in the community.”
