According to U.S. officials briefed on Israeli military operations, Israel has initiated the process of pumping seawater into Hamas’s extensive tunnel network in Gaza.

This effort is part of a comprehensive campaign to eliminate the underground infrastructure crucial to Hamas’s activities.

The flooding of the tunnels with water from the Mediterranean is still in its early stages and is just one of the methods Israel is employing to clear and dismantle these tunnels.

The Israeli defense minister’s spokesperson declined to comment, citing the classified nature of the tunnel operations, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Israeli authorities assert that Hamas’s underground system plays a pivotal role in the group’s battlefield operations.

They argue that the tunnels facilitate the movement of fighters, serve as storage for rockets and munitions, and allow the group’s leaders to command and control their forces.

Additionally, Israel believes that some hostages may be held inside these tunnels.
