A fuel tanker collided with another truck in Nigeria’s Niger state, causing an explosion that killed at least 52 people and burned over 50 cattle alive.

Search and rescue operations were ongoing, and victims were given a mass burial.

Niger state governor Mohammed Bago urged calm and reminded road users to follow traffic rules, CBS News has reported.

Fatal truck accidents are common in Nigeria due to the lack of an efficient railway system; in 2020, 1,531 tanker crashes resulted in 535 deaths.
