A military helicopter crash in rural El Salvador killed nine people, including the national police director, high-ranking police officials, and fugitive banker Manuel Coto.
The crash occurred Sunday night after Coto, wanted for embezzling over $35 million, was captured in Honduras and handed over to Salvadoran authorities.
President Nayib Bukele called for a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing that it should not be dismissed as a simple accident, ABC News has reported.
Among the victims was Mauricio Arriaza Chicas, who led the government’s controversial crackdown on gangs, which has drawn criticism from human rights groups.
