U.S. sanctions Russian and Iranian entities over attempted election interference

The U.S. imposed sanctions on entities in Iran and Russia for attempting to interfere in the 2024 elections.

The Treasury Department stated that a group affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a Moscow-based affiliate of Russia’s GRU aimed to incite socio-political tensions and influence the U.S. electorate through disinformation campaigns.

Both Iran and Russia denied the allegations, with Iran calling them baseless and Russia asserting respect for the will of the American people, NBC News has reported.

The sanctions target operations involving disinformation, including the creation of deepfakes and fake news stories.
