Mass shooting in Ukraine’s capital leaves 6 dead before police shoot and kill gunman

A gunman killed six people and wounded at least 14 after opening fire and taking hostages inside a supermarket in Kyiv, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The attacker, who was later shot dead by police, barricaded himself in the store after setting fire to an apartment and moving through a central district armed with an automatic weapon.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the suspect was born in Russia and had a prior criminal record, though his motive remains under investigation.

Special police units stormed the building after negotiations failed during a 40-minute standoff, NPR has reported.

Officials described the incident as terrorism, marking a rare mass shooting in wartime Kyiv since the 2022 Russian invasion.
