DeSantis acknowledges Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ may wind down operations

Ron DeSantis said the state may soon close “Alligator Alcatraz,” a controversial immigration detention center built in the Everglades as part of federal deportation efforts.

He described the facility as temporary and a “bridge” while federal authorities expand capacity, though he did not give a specific closure date.

The center, which processed thousands of undocumented migrants, has faced criticism over high costs, environmental concerns, and alleged mistreatment of detainees.

Lawsuits from environmental groups, tribal communities, and civil rights advocates argue it has harmed ecosystems and violated due process rights, Politico has reported.

While federal officials say the site is still under review and useful for immigration enforcement, critics continue to push for its immediate shutdown and environmental remediation.
