Veteran Texas congressman Al Green beaten in Democratic primary runoff

Freshman Democratic Congressman Christian Menefee defeated longtime Representative Al Green in a Texas runoff shaped by Republican-led redistricting.

The new congressional map, backed by Republicans and encouraged by Donald Trump, eliminated much of Green’s longtime district and forced him to seek election in a new one.

Menefee, who recently won a special election to fill the seat, faced criticism from Green over alleged ties to wealthy political interests and cryptocurrency donors.

Green, known nationally for his outspoken criticism of Trump and high-profile protests, had served in Congress for more than two decades, The Guardian has reported.

Menefee’s victory marks a significant political shift in Houston-area Democratic politics amid broader battles over redistricting in Texas.
