Former Vice President Mike Pence said there is “clearly” an effort to rewrite the history of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, pointing to recent White House statements and actions he believes shift blame away from rioters.
He criticized a White House timeline that he said wrongly blamed Capitol Police and Democrats for the attack, as well as online messaging praising President Donald Trump’s handling of the event.
Pence also condemned a Justice Department-backed “anti-weaponization” fund, calling it inappropriate if it could compensate people involved in the riot.
The fund, created through a legal settlement tied to Trump-related litigation, has already been temporarily blocked by a federal judge, The Hill has reported.
Pence argued that most Americans and Republicans would oppose any effort to reward those who attacked law enforcement or the Capitol.
