Meteor over Massachusetts prompts reports of booms across US and Canada

A meteor about 1 meter wide entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border on Saturday afternoon, according to NASA and the American Meteor Society.

It traveled at extremely high speed and likely broke apart about 40 miles above the ground, producing a bright fireball and powerful sonic booms.

Reports of loud double booms and shaking buildings came from multiple states, ranging from Massachusetts to as far as Canada.

NASA confirmed the object was natural space material, not debris, and said its energy release was equivalent to roughly 300 tons of TNT, The Guardian has reported.

Officials said it most likely burned up before reaching the ground, with no impact or seismic event detected.
