Lab worker who vanished last year found dead in New Mexico national forest

Remains found in New Mexico’s Carson National Forest have been identified as Melissa Casias, a Los Alamos National Laboratory employee who disappeared in June 2025.

A hiker discovered the remains in a remote area, where authorities also found a handgun nearby.

Officials are still determining the cause and manner of her death as the investigation continues.

Casias, 53, was reported missing after failing to return home or report to work, and her personal belongings were later found by family members, CBS News has reported.

Her case is among several involving missing or deceased workers linked to sensitive scientific facilities, with the FBI investigating possible connections.
