Israel hits Iran with air strikes after Tehran fires missiles at northern Israel

Israel carried out airstrikes in western and central Iran after Iran launched missiles toward northern Israel, marking the first direct exchanges between the two countries since a ceasefire took effect two months ago.

Iran described its missile attacks as the start of a week-long campaign of continuous strikes.

The escalation followed Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, which Israel said were retaliation for rocket fire from Hezbollah.

The renewed violence has raised concerns that the fragile regional ceasefire is breaking down, the BBC has reported.

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly urged Israel not to retaliate, arguing that Iran’s attacks had caused little damage and warning against further escalation.
