The U.S. launched several hours of military strikes against Iran on Tuesday after a U.S. Apache helicopter was brought down near the Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump authorized the operation, which targeted Iranian air-defense, radar, and ground-control sites and was described by U.S. officials as a proportional act of self-defense.

Iran responded by launching drones at the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, while neighboring countries reported intercepting incoming missiles and projectiles.

Although Trump initially downplayed the helicopter incident, he approved military action after receiving updated briefings from senior defense officials, the WSJ has reported.

The two American crew members from the downed Apache were rescued in a first-of-its-kind operation using a U.S. drone boat, while the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
