Woman falls 1,500 feet while climbing Mt. Shasta – and survives

A novice climber survived a 1,500-foot fall while ascending Mt. Shasta in California over the weekend.

The 31-year-old woman was climbing the Avalanche Gulch route with two other inexperienced climbers when she fell from around 13,000 feet to about 11,500 feet.

Rescue teams from the U.S. Forest Service, California Highway Patrol, and local search and rescue responded, though cloud cover initially hampered helicopter access.

Rangers eventually reached her on foot, stabilized her condition with help from a climbing partner and another climber, and coordinated her rescue, the USA Today has reported.

Officials highlighted ongoing safety concerns on the popular route, especially involving inexperienced climbers and difficult conditions.
