China test-fired a long-range ballistic missile with a dummy warhead into the Pacific Ocean, marking its first known launch of this kind since 2024 and saying it was not aimed at any country.
The missile was reportedly launched from a nuclear-powered submarine, though China did not identify the missile type or disclose the launch and impact locations.
Australia, New Zealand, and Japan condemned the test as destabilizing and expressed concern over China’s growing military activities in the Pacific.
Analysts believe the launch may have tested the JL-3 submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile and signaled China’s expanding nuclear capabilities, the New York Times has reported.
Experts also expect China to conduct more missile tests as it strengthens its nuclear deterrent and evaluates regional and international responses.
