Two Tennessee National Guard members assigned to a federal crime-fighting task force in Memphis fatally shot a 20-year-old man during a pursuit after he allegedly turned toward them with a gun.
Authorities said the soldiers were responding to reports of gunfire early Sunday when the encounter escalated into a shooting, which is now under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
The deployment is part of a federal effort under President Donald Trump, supported by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, to bolster policing in Memphis through the Memphis Safe Task Force.
The man killed, Tyrin Johnson, was described by family as a college student, father, and aspiring musician, though officials said he had minor prior traffic violations, the AP has reported.
The incident has raised renewed scrutiny over the presence of federal troops in the city and the use of force in task force operations.
