Super Typhoon Dolphin has strengthened into a powerful Category 5-equivalent storm with sustained winds of 160 mph as it moves northwest across the Western Pacific.

Forecasters say the storm underwent explosive intensification, with winds increasing by 95 mph in just 24 hours and a tiny “pinhole eye” signaling its rapid strengthening.

While Dolphin currently poses no immediate threat to land, it is expected to reach peak winds of 160 to 170 mph.

Meteorologists note that only a handful of Central Pacific storms have ever tracked westward into Japan, Fox Weather has reported.

NOAA also says the current El Niño is rapidly strengthening, increasing the likelihood of a very strong or Super El Niño later this year.
