Sacked Ukrainian defence minister calls for presidential election

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for elections during the war with Russia, presenting a major challenge to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s leadership.

Fedorov argued that democracy should not be held hostage by Russia and called for a safe and legal way to restore Ukraine’s democratic process despite the ongoing conflict.

Ukraine has been under martial law since Russia’s invasion in 2022, which currently prevents national elections from being held.

Fedorov was unexpectedly dismissed as defense minister in July, and his removal sparked protests amid reported tensions with military leadership and concerns over corruption, the BBC has reported.

Zelensky has not responded to Fedorov’s comments, while Fedorov has given no indication that he plans to run for office or seek another government position.
