Thousands of rail passengers in the Netherlands faced major delays and cancellations after suspected saboteurs deliberately placed pipes and other materials on tracks at numerous locations.

ProRail said the materials caused track-circuit failures and disrupted services across central and northern parts of the country.

The cities of Zwolle, Deventer, and Amersfoort were among the areas hit hardest during the morning rush hour.

Police launched an investigation into the suspected sabotage, but no suspects or claims of responsibility had been identified, Sky News has reported.

No injuries were reported, although the disruption also affected road traffic as several railway crossings were closed.
