On Friday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) penned a letter to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, requesting a briefing on the details surrounding the recent discovery of cocaine in the White House.
The committee aims to investigate the incident and gather further information.
In the letter, Comer expressed his concern, stating that the presence of illegal drugs within the White House is unacceptable and represents a shameful moment in its history, Breitbart News reported.
The discovery occurred when Secret Service uniformed officers conducting a routine patrol in the West Wing found a plastic baggie containing a white powdery substance on Sunday at approximately 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
The finding led to an evacuation of the White House, and a hazmat team from the D.C. Fire Department was dispatched to identify the substance, which was confirmed to be cocaine.
According to the Secret Service, the plastic baggie was discovered in a cubby located at an entrance used by staffers and official visitors.
This entrance leads to a lower level of the West Wing in proximity to the Situation Room. Staffers are allowed to bring personal guests through this entrance after the guests undergo a background check and pass through a security checkpoint staffed by the Secret Service.
Currently, the Secret Service, with assistance from the FBI, is reviewing surveillance tapes and visitor logs to investigate the matter further.
