Man found guilty in Alaska Native woman’s killing that was recorded on video

A South African man, who subjected an Alaska Native woman to torture while narrating and recording a video of her demise, was declared guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday for the killings of both her and another Native woman.

Brian Steven Smith, a 52-year-old from South Africa, received a unanimous verdict from the Anchorage jury after deliberating for less than two hours.

Smith displayed no visible reaction in court, maintaining a stoic demeanor as the judge announced the jury’s decision.

His arrest ensued when a woman, who later became a key witness in the Anchorage trial, stole his cellphone from his truck and uncovered disturbing footage from 2019.

This footage was then copied onto a memory card and ultimately handed over to the police, NBC News reported.

During the trial, Smith admitted to the murder of another Alaska Native woman, initially misidentified, whose body had been discovered earlier.

All 14 charges against Smith, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Kathleen Henry in 2019 and Veronica Abouchuk in either 2018 or 2019, were met with guilty verdicts.

Additionally, he was convicted of multiple counts of sexual assault.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 12 and July 19, with Alaska not having the death penalty as a potential punishment.
