Tornadoes touch down in Midwest with millions at severe weather risk for weekend

Severe spring storms swept across the U.S. Midwest on Friday, with reports of apparent tornadoes in Illinois and Minnesota and widespread warnings across multiple states.

The Storm Prediction Center said about 38 million people were at risk of severe weather, including tornado threats in Iowa, Wisconsin, and northern Illinois.

Heavy rainfall also raised flooding concerns in states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Kansas, following earlier record flooding in parts of Wisconsin.

Officials reported downed trees and power lines in Illinois towns, prompting emergency warnings and restricted access to affected areas, NBC News has reported.

The extreme weather comes amid unusually warm temperatures across much of the country, though a cold front is expected to bring cooler conditions soon.
