2 Army soldiers sustain injuries after bear encounter in Anchorage

Two U.S. Army soldiers were injured after encountering a brown bear during land navigation training at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Both soldiers used bear spray during the encounter but still required medical treatment for their injuries, according to officials.

The incident is currently under investigation, and the soldiers’ identities have not been released.

The base, located in Anchorage, has previously experienced similar wildlife encounters, including a fatal bear mauling during training in 2022, the USA Today has reported.

Officials noted that such incidents are a known risk in the region due to the local bear population.
