Ex-officer planned to kill Black people in mass shooting at a New Orleans festival

Authorities say former North Carolina law enforcement officer Christopher Gillum was arrested in Florida after allegedly planning a mass shooting targeting Black people at a major New Orleans festival, believed to be Jazz Fest.

He was found at a hotel in Destin with a handgun and about 200 rounds of ammunition and was taken into custody without incident.

Federal officials say he was traveling toward Louisiana when he was located, and he is expected to be extradited to face charges.

Gillum’s family had previously reported him missing and said he had expressed violent threats and had a history of mental health concerns, the AP has reported.

Law enforcement agencies in multiple states are investigating, though officials say there are currently no known active threats to festivals in Louisiana.
