Republicans fail to attach SAVE America Act to party-line funding package

A group of Republican senators joined Democrats to block an attempt to attach voter ID and citizenship verification measures to a broader GOP immigration funding bill, with the amendment failing 48–50 during a late-night Senate vote session.

The proposal, led by Sen. John Kennedy, would have required voter ID, limited voting to Election Day, and imposed faster ballot counting rules, but it lacked enough Republican support to advance.

Senators Thom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell voted against the measure, effectively helping sink it.

The defeat highlights internal GOP divisions despite continued pressure from some Republicans and former President Donald Trump to pass stricter voting laws, Fox News has reported.

Democrats criticized the proposal as unnecessary and overly restrictive, arguing it would not address any proven systemic problem.
