UK to pay for French officers to deport asylum seekers from war-torn countries

The UK and France have agreed on a new deal in which the UK will fund 200 French officers to detain and deport migrants attempting to cross the Channel.

A detention site in Dunkirk will target people from 10 high-risk countries, with deportations to home nations deemed safe or to other EU countries they passed through.

The plan is backed by a £162 million package, alongside a separate £500 million agreement to strengthen border enforcement.

Critics argue the policy is unethical and potentially unlawful, especially for asylum seekers fleeing war and persecution, The Guardian has reported.

While officials say the scheme could detain thousands, challenges remain, and the facility is not expected to be fully operational until late 2026.
