Lightning may have sparked fire destroying top US marine science lab, officials say

A major fire destroyed the University of South Florida’s Marine Science Laboratory in St. Petersburg after breaking out on Saturday.

Officials say lightning in the area at the time is being investigated as a possible cause.

More than 60 units and about 200 firefighters responded, but the building was completely lost despite the large emergency response.

USF President Moez Limayem said the cause has not been confirmed but noted reports of nearby lightning storms, The Guardian has reported.

University leaders pledged to rebuild the facility and continue supporting students and staff.
