UK PM Starmer says there could be new powers to ban pro-Palestinian marches

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government may consider banning some pro-Palestinian marches, citing concerns about their “cumulative effect” on the Jewish community following recent violence in London.

He said while peaceful protest and free expression must be protected, certain chants such as “Globalise the Intifada” are unacceptable and should be prosecuted.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been frequent in the UK since the Gaza war began in 2023, with critics arguing they have contributed to rising antisemitism, while supporters say they highlight human rights concerns.

Starmer said the government is reviewing whether stronger powers are needed to regulate protests more broadly, Reuters has reported.

The comments come as the UK raises its terrorism threat level to “severe,” citing heightened risks to Jewish and Israeli communities.
