Asteroid Apophis to pass closer to Earth than many satellites in 2029, NASA says

A large asteroid named Apophis, about the size of the Eiffel Tower, will pass extremely close to Earth on April 13, 2029, but scientists say it poses no risk of impact.

NASA estimates it will come within about 20,000 miles of Earth, closer than some satellites, and has ruled out any collision risk for at least the next 100 years.

First discovered in 2004, the asteroid was once thought to pose a potential threat, but improved tracking has confirmed its safe trajectory.

The close flyby will allow scientists to study how Earth’s gravity affects the asteroid’s shape and orbit, with NASA and the European Space Agency planning spacecraft observations, Fox News has reported.

Apophis may even be visible to the naked eye from parts of the Eastern Hemisphere during its pass.
