Robotics pioneer Colin Angle, known for creating the Roomba at iRobot, has unveiled a new startup robot called “Familiar” that is designed to function like a lifelike pet companion.
The four-legged AI-powered machine is intended to follow users around, respond to touch and sound, and adapt to human behavior over time without speaking.
Angle says advances in generative AI now make it possible to create a robot that can emotionally engage with people in ways earlier technology could not.
The project is aimed partly at older adults who may want companionship but are unable or unwilling to care for real pets, the AP has reported.
Experts in robotics suggest such emotionally responsive machines could be useful for companionship and mental health support, provided they are perceived as cute and non-threatening.
