Schumer says Democrats will force Senate votes to block Trump’s DOJ ‘lawfare’ fund

Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, say they will force repeated votes this week to challenge a Trump-backed “weaponization” legal relief fund.

The fund, created through a settlement involving a dropped lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service, is intended to compensate people the administration describes as victims of political “lawfare,” but critics call it a potential “slush fund.”

Democrats argue it could include payouts to controversial figures, including some linked to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, and are pushing Republicans to publicly take a stance.

While Democrats likely lack the votes to fully block the measure, they plan to use amendments and floor votes to keep pressure on GOP lawmakers ahead of elections, CNBC has reported.

A court has temporarily halted the fund’s implementation as legal and political battles over it continue.
