A Serbian U.N. peacekeeper, Sergeant Milovan Jovanovic, died after mortar shells struck a UNIFIL position near Marjayoun in southeastern Lebanon, while two other peacekeepers were wounded.
The attack marks the seventh U.N. peacekeeper death in Lebanon since fighting between Hezbollah and Israel resumed in March.
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the incident, stressing that attacks on peacekeepers may constitute war crimes and must be investigated.
Initial findings suggest the position was hit by indirect fire from north of the Litani River, Reuters has reported.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions, with Hezbollah rejecting a new ceasefire proposal and Israel refusing to withdraw troops from Lebanon.
